VPNs provide a layer of privacy, and for general purposes this is 'good enough'. Let's not kid ourselves though. All electronic communication is never secure. Some forms of communication are more secure than others. All transmitting/receiver forms tend to be the worst. Even encrypted, its pretty much a ruse because government demands from the company the keys for a back door.
