I'd have to go back and search through my files, but I recall reading that the grays and reptilian-type creatures get their 'sustenance' from soaking or bathing in a soup of human blood and specific organs. We are just a food crop for them.
They also enjoy the blood and specific organs of other animals, which really seemed to come to the fore in the early 1970s when all of the animal mutilations began happening.
Upon investigation, the animals were found with all of their blood missing and specific organs cut out with laser precision. We didn't understand it then, but we do now...
