Huh. Well, I'm older than you, so maybe it was because it was a different generation or a different place in the country. I had some homely lesbian teachers and they were just extremely kind and excellent teachers. But that was when they wouldn't have been able to come out of the closet. They were just 'unmarried' and you called them 'Miss ___'.

We have got to get our country's sh_t together. Things are getting insane.
