If there was a skirmish between Ukraine and Russian forces, why fight over a near-completely unpopulated nuclear disaster area? Shouldn't it amount to useless territory?
Unless... it's not, and there was a highly strategic reason for securing Chernobyl (of which we may learn about in time).
It's not really unpopulated. There are a lot of tourism spots and a lot of science happening in the area.
Kyle Hill (yes, the nerd) had been doing an ongoing Chernobyl series as a more recent reference, and toured the zone and talked about some of the research and experiments still happening there.
