Russian reports on suggested that it was a Ukrainian artillery strike on Feb 26, 2022 that did it.
The day before on Feb 25, 2022, the Russians reported had already captured Gostomel Airport in an operation which took place on which took place on Feb 24, 2022, and was using it as a landing point for the Kiev operations. No one reported any notable damage to the airfield infrastructure during the landing operation. Meanwhile, the UAF was making preparations to shell the airport with MLRS Grad lanuchers using residents as human shields.
Initial reports of the loss of the An-225 only came the day after these operations took place.
White phosphorous, a weapon prohibited by international laws, was deployed during the shelling:
It would not make any tactical or strategic sense for the Russian forces to attack a base they had already captured in order to create bad PR for themselves and to destroy such a valuable asset, nor to deploy such a destructive and prohibited chemical weapon during their attacks.
