Ronald Reagan was extremely outspoken against the Evil Empire of soviet russia; what changed?

I don't think Putin is a bad man, esp. not if even 25% of what I've read about him is true; stuff like Putin saying the west is run by satanic elites, how we are killing our own society & culture, etc.

But when did russia go from the Evil Empire in the 70s / 80s (and earlier I'm sure) to no longer being our enemy?

Can someone explain?

I also sure AF do NOT want any more wars, whether with Russia or UKR or whoever.
