Don't know if the Russians have Mariupol yet, but pretty sure Putin wants it to complete the land bridge to Crimea. Wonder if Azov Battalion will be there again.
My understanding is that they are based there, so the whole leadership of the unit would be smack bang entrenched to the max in town.
I think some detachments from Azov were operating just North of Lugansk, so they have been trapped there since day 2 of the operation.
Vostock battalion (Donetsk) are taking the East - and Russians Marines (I think) are heading in from the West. I would assume Chechens would be used to go in and take them out, but I dont know. Havent heard anything about that.
I remember watching all this in 2015, where Azov first became famous for their battlefield actions. The whole time there were operating out of Mariopol. There was a point where Mariopol got close to being surrounded, but Azov managed to hang in there and restore control of the region.
That was against "irregulars' from Donetsk though (with a bit of Russian help possibly)
Its going to be an "interesting" fight this time.
I have no way of knowing, but from what Ive seen, there are a mix of capablities within Azov. Everything from regular gangsters with no real use on the battlefield, through to hardcore mercs / ex FFL sort of thing.
I think its fair to assume that the Russians dont want this little battle to drag on for too long. They might just go full Berlin on this one - they know it works. That means take one building block at a time - just wheel up the TOS-1 heavy flamethrowers and delete the entire building and all its contents. Remove Mariopol from the map.
Give civilians a chance to evacuate then all that's left are combatants. Yes. Get it over with fast. Just watched a video of the tos-1. Not so much a flame thrower. More like a rocket launcher/artillery piece that Eliminates the need for HE and then incendiary. It's the whole package in one boom.
Yeah, its called a "Heavy Flamethrower" in Russian service, but we would call it a Multiple Rocket Launcher. Goes far, big boom. Not the most "precision" weapon, but great for deleting something off the map.
I think they have left open escape corridors and given civvies 48hrs to clear out ? They seem to be doing that everywhere else.
Its Mariopol though where those video have leaked that show people trying to leave town getting pulled over and kidnapped / shot
The Crucifixion. Warning pretty graphic.

Lets see how it pans out

Over 14000 civilian casualties in the region since 2014. Some good books on these topics:
"Frontline Ukraine" and "the Putin Paradox" by Richard Sakwa.
"The Plot to Scapegoat Russia" - Dan Kovalilk
