What can be learned from Canada’s Trucker Convoy?
The success of the Canadian trucker convoy appeared to have the greatest public impact leading up to the Ottawa ‘Truck-In’ and shortly afterwards. The Ottawa 'Truck-In" consisted of parked trucks around the parliament building and the downtown area. It really caught the Trudeau government off guard and we could see their message was in disarray. Later though, the government formulated a plan and recouped a narrative leading to Trudeau calling for a declaration of a national emergency. This was more of an 'excuse' to use the police state to remove and arrest the parked truckers. In essence, they no longer treated the truckers as protesters, but as squatters. In 3rd world nations, the police state has long used this method to remove squatters from lands the government wants cleared. This was how the truckers were treated.
Despite, the great revelations provided to the public of the government being able to freeze bank accounts at will ad libitum, I believe the trucker’s message was countered. The trucker’s started to leave Ottawa. So far, I haven’t seen any policy changes from the Canadian government.
Can anything be learned from the experience of our Canadian neighbors to the north? One can be assured that Washington DC has also learned from the Ottawa experience.
I hope the trucker convoy doesn’t settle and protest in Washington DC itself. It appears to be a J6-type trap to me. If the truckers are a moving convoy outside the DC jurisdiction, it may be far more difficult for the federal government to categorize the truckers as 'squatters'. The convoy can make their demands heard by simply driving on the DC beltway and circling Washington DC. If the truckers continuously drive around the Washington DC beltway, even it if it is half or a quarter of the total number of trucker convoy, this will add traffic to DC without any real crimes ever being committed. They are just using the Beltway like everyone else. Two, three, or more groupings of 2500 or so trucks circling the beltway would stress the traffic in DC. The use of the freeway system called the Capital Beltway is actually Interstate 495, a 64-mile highway that encircles Washington DC. Everyone traveling from Boston to Miami goes the Capital Beltway. Tolls are waived for buses, carpools of at least three people, motorcycles, and emergency vehicles. Visiting from out of town and having an E-ZPass from another area are honored, can use the express lanes.
The traffic at any hour can be chosen by groups of the convoy. With the speed limit typically being 55 mph, that means the maximum limit of speed is 55 mph. Speeds less than that are legal (within reason). Just the added number of trucks on the Capital Beltway will cause traffic to precipitously slow down. It’s unavoidable. The truckers will have a ‘captive’ audience for marketing their message. They are constantly moving, so they're not squatting.
The Trucker convoy needs to be prescient and be aware of the 'squatter' categorization and avoid entrapment. It's a sure thing this will be attempted by the DC government.
One thing for sure. They can add outrageous gas/diesel prices to their list.
