Bad advice in many, many ways.
Every firearm purchase from a store is recorded on a form already for a criminal background check. All stors are required to keep those forms in perpetuity.
If the store closes, the forms go to the ATF central repository. They aren't allowed (yet) to digitize the records, but they can microfiche. LEO agencies can request a search for serials only in case of crimes. It can take weeks to find any given one.
Scratching S/N off is Hollywood. The indent/impact made from the impact changes the metal. Even if you file it off, it can still be detected. S/N isn't the only way to trace a gun anyways, so kinda stupid.
Last point, EVERYONE will squak if they go door to door. Even before we get there, once it is announced they're going to do that, do you really think Americans will sit ideally by? Have you heard of April 15, 1775?
We're a long way from there anyways, so any call to action like this is premature, and really makes you look like FBI or some such.
