They heard cis and trans in chemistry class and brought the terms into strange territory. In chemistry, you can have two atoms or groups of atoms sticking off one side of a molecule. That is cis. If one was sticking off the other side instead, you would have trans.

As a chemical engineer this misuse of the terms has caused me no end of confusion and annoyance.
