Thank you. That supports my instinct on this. It's likely that the Nazis were trying to discourage civilians from leaving town.

My conjecture: If the Nazis saw the western journalists and recognised them as such, they may have fired on them so that their crimes would not be discovered, not realising that the west would always spin the story to back them up anyway.
