I think I questioned specific things for a long time, starting with Bush 41 and the first Gulf War in '91. I didn't understand why everyone was so damn happy about a war over oil when we have oil here. It was enough to make my first presidential vote for Clinton in '92. The only time I voted for a Dem for president, but far from the only only vote I'm ashamed to have cast.
Even with both Gulf wars I still believed the GOP was trying to do the right thing but screwing up. I started to at least think the GOP was in the business of self-sabotage, between the attacks on Romney by the other GOP candidates in the '08 campaign (back when I thought he would have been a vastly superior pick over No Name) and Romney self-destructing in the 2nd 2012 debate when he had Obama dead to rights.
I started putting it together when the GOP suddenly found their inner honey badger by attacking Trump. Using covid to get rid of him after his first term successes woke me up for good. Both sides are evil, and honest brokers who even want to be involved in politics are an anomaly. It's disheartening, but knowing what I know now has lifted a burden off my shoulders I didn't even realize was there.
