The similarities with that situation and Putin in Ukraine are striking

With all due respect, this is absurd.

Putin did not care about any approval by the Biden admin. He made it clear that he was recognising the independence of LPR and DPR without any approval from anyone - including US. It was a unilateral decision because he was ready to move.

If Putin fails and it is highly doubtful that could happen - that would be because he miscalculated his strategy, not because he got set up.
