If there was ever a cabal movie in sheep's clothing, it's Pleasantville.
What I got from that movie was that most NPC's can't handle reality without going off the rails so they prefer their little mental cages, it gives them comfort.
They can't stand anyone who isn't in a cage because they see it as a direct threat to their safety, so they attack.
