"Magi" refers to alchemy of its day which included astronomy/astrology. Making an order of the heavens, said to be reflected here on earth. Jerusalem, being at the time, considered 'the naval of the world' as it's geo epicenter was chosen as the main entry point of souls. The date was determined by the stars and the date selected for its importance. THIS is why the 'magi' were predictors of the event.
Yet 'magi' are considered anti-thema to the church now.
The Roman Catholic church determined that the Solstice would become the birthday of their own messiah as a Julian.
