Yes. I've been in ancient history lately (from 4000 BC to 1000 BC approx), and that area is doomed just like the steppes, everyone wants to go across it. Between Egypt, all the nomads from the general direction of NW Iran, all the sea faring people coming from the Mediterranean, It's been very hard for anyone trying to live there because all these parties meet in the middle and fight.
