Exactly. There was a reason. I will get downvoted for this, but that’s how I view slavery. There will always be a segment of a population that can’t take care of themselves. Slavery can be a blessing to some people and definitely increases a society’s prosperity. The alternative in modern civilization is welfare and incarceration which increases crime and debt where nobody wins.
Why if they can't take care of themselves, then they must become slaves? Shouldn't they just become dependents? How is slavery a blessing? Couldn't crime drop and debts be paid off if there existed more intact nuclear families who were doing well with good morals and budgeting?
“Dependent on the family” is completely different than “dependent on the state”. I am not referring to people with disabilities. I am referring to able-bodied adults who are criminals. The able-bodied lazy people should get nothing from the State but should be able to “volunteer” for slavery in return for shelter and food.
Oh, ok. Yes, criminals should do voluntold work (the worse the crime, the harder the labor). Lazy people shouldn't be able receive welfare from the state (charity doesn't count). But making the lazies slaves (where they're not seen as 100% a person and at the mercy and whim of a slaveowner) just doesn't sound right to me.
Criminals should be enslaved. Lazy folks could volunteer.
