Maybe I'm stupid but why don't they have alternators and charge their own batteries?
You are thinking of a hybrid that has a gas engine to drive the alternator to charge the battery part. The battery and electric motor helps with acceleration and stop/go traffic, improving range tremendously. The gas motor helps with driving at speed and keeping the battery charged.
A pure electric car has no way to charge the battery other than regenerative braking.
What would drive the alternator? An electric motor? The output energy of the alternator would not equal the input energy due to resistance causing loss
I have been saying this for years. I think the answer is - it would be free energy and that is not allowed. Instead of the engine charging the alternator, connect to wheels for rotation. 4 wheels = 4 alternators.
Attaching alternator to the wheel adds resistance, the energy captured by the alternator would not be greater than (or even equal to) the energy lost in resistance
Three laws of energy. 1 You can't win. 2. You can't break even. 3 You can't leave the game.
Hey hey! free energy is real, see this:

I’ve been driving a Tesla for over five years now. For cross country road trips, you are correct, the range is about 200 miles (300 with newer batteries) when we drive 80mph, and the charge times at least 30 minutes every 2-3 hours. It would be annoying.
But for daily driving and even short 200 mile trips, it works great. That is 99.5% of my driving.
On Top Gear, they're continually running out of energy and it take forever to recharge.
The electric car is still primitive. We cannot ditch the combustion engine yet.
There is always the Ferrari EV:

Yes....hahaha!
Mine has paid for itself in fuel savings.
I still prefer my turbo diesel, but I went from an Infiniti Q45 to the Leaf... and the Leaf is a nicer car to drive.
What? The Corvette Z06 is taking pre-orders right now.
Don’t read news on April Fools day.
Agreed.
The EV only actually makes sense if you drive it enough and it's your second car.
People who think they'll road trip in an EV are retarded.
I love my Leaf, but I recognize it for what it is, a puddle jumper.
Imagine if Edison didn’t put the kabash on the French Tesla tower (Eiffel Tower). Cars could be powered like wireless cell phone chargers or not even need a battery. Edison did more to suppress electrical advancements only because it was difficult to meter.
There are other forms of energy that have been well documented and known to work well. Cold Fusion is one method however, that went the way of the Tesla tower.
