If you can't trust someone with the small things, there's no reason to trust about anything. People rationalize that small lies aren't worth worrying about because nobody's perfect, or some such. They don't understand that one is either trustworthy or one isn't, and the size of the betrayal is immaterial.
I just started reading Edward Bernay's book from 1928 entitled: Propaganda,
as manipulation. Only a few chapters in and one can see how relevant it is today.
