The top mod there actually does a pretty good job of modding. Ive complimented him on it several times. They allow all kinds of opinions, and gently ask you NOT to (call names, etc). If you continue name calling, you get a 3 day suspension.
Most other subs, there is only one kind of suspension, and that is a permanent suspension.
The top mod is smart, because he can put someone in time out until they cool off, but then he lets them back in, to debate another day. The key to his sub’s success, is allowing so many people to participate.
Contrast that with digg.com which permanently suspended a lot of their power users, and all those power users went over to new upstarts like reddit and twitter.
Basically, if you suspend users, they just go somewhere else.
