Approximately 20,000 of those youth (from U.S. foster care) age-out each year without positive familial supports or any family connection at all. Within 18 months of emancipation 40-50% of foster youth become homeless.

Yes, which hopefully I remember accurately.
This CASA was encouraged to join because she wanted to do something good for her community -- I know this person, and can testify that she is, in fact, someone who does good because she is good.
Well, a few months (maybe a year) into being a CASA, she found that the leader of her local CASA was diverting funds. Some kind of shenanigans, too, regarding whose foster home kids go to, how much money the foster family gets per kid, etc. I think a judge was in on it? Anyway, it's anecdotal so I apologize for that. I'll talk to this person and get more details if I can.

Follow up: I spoke to the ex-CASA I know. According to her, the leader of her local CASA was writing his own checks, promoting people to the CASA board by his own whims (in other words, no oversight), and was just generally a very corrupt individual. He was ousted, but it really ruined the name of the organization in the area.
Apparently the Judge was solid, though. A really good one, interested and invested in placing these children in good homes.
