I'm not the smartest man in the world, but I can feel when gas is pumping through the nozzle. I don't lock the handle until the flow has started. It isn't out of fear of this type of scam, but it just always seemed to make sense to me to feel the rate of flow to see if the rate is fast or too slow. Either way, you can hear the fuel going into your inlet. I can't imagine being oblivious to miss this.
It seems that it wouldn't work out well if they pump more than you do. That would be hard to control if the next vehicle comes in and it is a big truck. I think the point is to get away without paying. I don't see how this would always work out for the bad guys if their credit card was used in the pump too. It would be easy to track the bad guys credit card too. If the card was stolen, you wouldn't bother swapping nozzles. Maybe I am just not getting it.

Watch the report again. Both cars have gas pumping, they just switch the nozzles so the bad guys get more gas basically.
