For anyone doing this:

thank you
make sure your sign can't be moved to point to a different candidate (i.e., put the name on the sign)
this looks like public property, but don't get caught trespassing if the sign is on private property
you could also staple a light blue mask over that bright red apple. Stay safe!

Good advice other than I would say scrap the 4th one, do not do a single thing to deface their sign otherwise they'll have an excuse to do the same to yours (sure they might go ahead and do it anyways but thats beside the point). The sign as is is absolutely perfect because it accomplishes the task of defacing the other person's sign without actually doing anything to the sign itself.
