I have wondered this and believe you are right; Life would be tranquil. I'm also of the belief that a certain amount of drama is needed in our existence in order to achieve perfect emotional symmetry, as adversity is part of our survival --but, it needs to happen organically. This mass-psychosis generated drama is orchestrated to tip the scale so that people literally go crazy and give up. The line about people ending up in the hospital after learning the truth is accurate.
