Egyptian Pharaohs revered the king cobra via their god Wadjet and sported the cobra on their elaborate headdresses. They are but one culture out of many. The Aztecs had their flying serpent god Quetzacoatl and the Australian Aborigines have their culture creation stories coming from the rainbow serpent, etc... These snake people have probably been around for longer than we can imagine.
