Why would Hindu parents sent their kid to a private Roman Catholic grammar school, then turn around and send him to an Episcopal high school? They're like polar opposites. Think English history: Catholics vs. the Anglicans. It's almost like they were purposely screwing with their own kid's head to MK-Ultra him.
The whole family being doctors of some sort doesn't surprise me at all. I knew a girl in high school whose family was from the Philippines. Both of her parents were doctors and she, along with all of her siblings ended up becoming doctors. It was expected of them.
The girl I knew had an interest in Spanish, and of all things, she majored in Spanish at an expensive girls' college, rather than majoring in something that would be more suited to the medical field. She was unable to get into a med school here, so she was sent back to the Philippines to get her medical degree there. It's easy to get your medical degree in another country, then come back to the States. All you have to do is take a test. If you pass it, you can practice here. Today, she's an anesthesiologist.
I always felt kinda sorry for her, because I don't think she really had any choice. She ended up marrying another Philipino that she met on the plane on the way over, who was apparently doing the exact same thing she was. I met him once and found him to be quite "old school" -- as in he intended to rule the roost in his house (I suspect with an iron fist). He very much wanted a son, and thankfully for her, their first child was a boy, but every child after that was a girl. I kinda think karma had a hand in that.
I always thought she seemed very sad after getting married and becoming a doctor, as it obviously wasn't what she wanted to do, but she was trapped by her family's rigid traditions. She's literally the bird in the gilded cage. She lives in a huge mansion now in Louisville, but it might as well be a prison.
If one wants to know what the caged bird sings, she would be the one to ask.
