They're both Jewish, both from Ashkenazi descendence, so they're going to look similar. Sagan is Polish, Schiff is German.

Check out Schiff in Wikipedia: Schiff is a Jewish and German surname meaning "ship". The Schiffs are known from "about 1370, the earliest date to which any contemporary Jewish family can be definitely traced".

I should probably do more research on Jewish etymology.
