They can't wake up. "If the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness."
The axioms to which you commit yourself determine everything about what you can think and believe. If your axioms are false, you can't escape them (how great is the darkness) short of Divine enlightening of the mind.
Jesus enlightens by implanting new and true axioms in one's mind. True axioms come from the Scriptures.
