If we are a democracy, as it almost stands now (perhaps does stand) and combined with the laziness available in human nature, everyone would vote for the easiest way out and redistribution of wealth. If we are a democracy, then there is really no reason for the electoral college.
If we are a strict republic, then we are Greece, with what amounts to a noble ruling class, and the people have less and less of an influence.
Therefore, we are a democratic republic that is outlined via the constitution. Not a republic and not a democracy.
