Valid observation and very true. Its definitely the fall-back for many. My daughter used it to good effect when she had a holiday job working for an Arab language school. The guy in charge was not good at paying wages, all the staff moaned but there was little to be done. She went to ask for her money and was given the usual excuses until she turned on the waterworks. Instant result!
Planned crying to solve that kind of problem is actually pretty creative. I wonder where it fits in with the usual four—fight, flight, fawn, and freeze. Maybe fawn? Even so, it’s pretty damn sophisticated, mainly because your daughter wasn’t driven to it. She apparently chose it as a tool—and it got results.
She should have had a bet with the other staff that she'd succeed when they all said she wouldn't.. Had the pleasure of showing them the cheque and saying KERRCHING!
