Rio Fresh’s onion warehouse in San Juan, Texas damaged in fire
April 1, 2022 - General News
San Juan, Texas: On March 31, 2022, a structure fire significantly damaged a large portion of the largest fresh onion packing facilities in South Texas. Other Texas grown items shipped through this warehouse include melons, greens, cabbage, and kale. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
“hundreds of thousands of warehouse space and structure was damaged from the fire.”
“If I had to guess, anywhere from 50 to 100 hundred truckloads of onions were lost in the fire, you can see them still burning in the distance.”
The food processing plant burned for over 17 hours. Taylor Farms is a major agriculture company that processes and delivers many of the salad kits seen in grocery stores. The cause of this fire is currently under investigation.
Taylor Farms plans to rebuild, reopen Salinas, California plant by next year
April 18, 2022 - Featured
The fire, which started April 13, was believed to be caused by a welding accident, Taylor said. The Salinas Fire Department has not released the official cause.
The company said in a statement it plans to process at its Yuma, AZ, facility, where it operates during the winter season. Transporting product to Yuma will, however, negatively affect shelf life, Taylor said.
“We’ve got usually a 14-day shelf life. And so if you have to bring it back up here you take about two days out of the shelf life. So, it’s not optimal,” Taylor said.
The company plains to retain and reassign the estimated 700 people employed at the damaged facility while it is rebuilt.
CF Industries: Union Pacific Curtails Fertilizer Shipments, Delaying Deliveries and Preventing New Rail Orders from Being Taken
By: Corporate Communications - April 14, 2022
“The timing of this action by Union Pacific could not come at a worse time for farmers,” said Tony Will, president and chief executive officer, CF Industries Holdings, Inc. “Not only will fertilizer be delayed by these shipping restrictions, but additional fertilizer needed to complete spring applications may be unable to reach farmers at all. By placing this arbitrary restriction on just a handful of shippers, Union Pacific is jeopardizing farmers’ harvests and increasing the cost of food for consumers.”
Union Pacific limiting the amount of shipments being sent by rail car.... which greatly impacts fertilizer shipments being sent to the farmers that are planting their spring crops right now....
