Sometimes, when you slow down a re-entry spacecraft from 13,000 mph to roughly 200 mph (slight difference in velocity)... you produce a sonic "BOOM".

I'm sure some environmentalist groups will say it causes "Climate Change" too... and that they need $500 Million to study the problem.
