I once grew a patch of about 6-8 cherry tomato plants along a downtown sidewalk where homeless would travel. The plants grew amazingly well, 12-15' vines, and produced hundreds of tomato's throughout the summer.
I had all I could eat, and I'm sure some bums picked them too. Occasionally I even had bums ask me if they could pick some, and I always told them yes, just don't pick too many, and leave some for me, and they were always thankful, and always left an ample supply behind.
Moral of the story- If you can afford to plant some easy to grow food, there is nothing wrong with helping to feed your fellow Americans. Nobody should ever starve in this country.
