Lincoln suffered from some serious health issues along with likely some genetic ones, too. Some surmise he was affected by Marfan Syndrome/Acromegaly, evidenced by one description of him :
"A reporter once described the 16th president as a “tall, lank, lean man considerably over six feet in height with stooping shoulders, long pendulous arms terminating in hands of extraordinary dimensions, which, however, were far exceeded in proportion by his feet”.
Other observers remarked about his changing face and suggested another genetic aberration:
"The left side of Lincoln's face was much smaller than the right, an aberration called Cranial Facial Microsomia.
The defect joins a long list of ailments — including smallpox, heart illness and depression — that modern doctors have diagnosed in Lincoln."
While I do agree that it’s possible, I think it could very well be an excuse. Remember how important the civil war was. It’d be so much easier to fool people into thinking this when recordings weren’t around then
