My theory is that Twitter engineers rolled back the algorithm to pre-May 11, 2020 while Musk and Twitter leadership were finalizing the deal.

Reason? May 11, 2020 is when Twitter added the Covid-19 warning bubbles and they're nowhere to be found now.

Twitter reported outages nationwide during that time, which is exactly what happens when you take the servers offline to do emergency maintenance.

There were also reports of a bunch of accounts spamming the same message about leaving Twitter with the following message

That’s it that seals the deal. I’m no longer a twitter user. I’ve been a user since 2009 and have never been more disgusted. I officially will be deactivating my account. I’m going to Instagram where they know how to run a platform.

Soon after u/TrappedInBlueState's post, Mark Hamill and other leftists noted they lost anywhere from 2,000-8,000 subscribers, which leads me to believe the bots used to amplify leftist accounts were deleted.

Now Twitter had another problem. Deleting this many bot accounts would be suspicious and would conflict with its reported subscriber numbers.

It appears what they did instead was restore all accounts banned from 2020-2022 for wrong think, mostly conservatives and/or Anons who had posted Q related content to stop so much of the bleeding. It doesn't appear they restored accounts banned for harassing other users.

If the reactivated accounts had already been subscribed to Donald Trump Jr. (highly likely), that easily explains his jump in subscribers and also explains why some of the "top" liberal accounts lost almost as many followers as he's gained.
