We capture rain water off our chicken coop and garage, into 55 gallon food grade plastic drums. That’s a game changer for the upper half of the yard, maybe it can work for you, too.
We just installed gutters last year and have nice downspouts that I don't want to mess with. We may look into a water collection system sometime to collect from another area, though. I saw a composter at Aldi I wouldn't mind using. I am even trying to get away from all the chemicals I can. Tom's is a decent brand that I get when on sale. (Please don't tell me it's Commie.)
You can just prop something as simple as a metal roofing slab at an angle and have it drain into a container. The bigger the surface area, the more water. I have a compost barrel but bc we compost large amounts it’s not as practical as composting on the ground in bins or piles. We drove t posts into the ground and slid wooden pallets vertically onto them and made 3 walls for our pile. The chickens turn it for us so it’s easy work. Chickens are one of the best friends in the garden, with their waste as fertilizer and eggs in the hole for growing tomatoes, etc. we use the hot waste straight from the coop as a weed killer along fences, too I’m not sure is Tom’s is commie. 😂We used to use the tooth paste but now we switched to Japanese-discovered nano hydoxyapatite.
I wouldn't mind moving into the country. I think we're here for awhile. We may rig something up.
Thanks!
Missouri and South Dakota have plenty of land for sale.
