Quick take from a scientist/engineer.
I think a core concept is that space as we see it is really just the void between bodies. The make up of this void are unknown but speculated. Its not that "space" it self is expanding but that all objects that we can measure are moving outward from a point, "the big bang". This can be easily understood on a smaller scale when you think about centrifugal force. As an object spins, it also has a force on it to move outward from a center. Keeping this in mind, we can zoom out to a galactic level. Planets rotate around larger celestial bodies, stars or black holes. Any given solar system is rotating around a central super massive black hole at the center of its galaxy. As stated earlier as things spin they also push outward from a center, ergo expansion of space.
How does even a single star remain stationary in such a vortex? All supposition and theory
The viewpoint of stationary in a grand scale is only when viewing things from a specific perspective. While riding a train and looking out a window, the background seems to be moving while the train is stationary. On a planetary scale, from the earth the sun looks stationary but from the perspective of the milky way its slowly moving.
