MIL is big on using Ancestry and she's done a hell of a job documenting a few hundred years of the family line. I've only fooled with it a little but it looks like they own you and your data and they can take away all your work any time they want. Is there any alternative that's not a bunch of crooks?
You can use historical documents to create your lineage. Much harder work, you may need to travel, but much more academically interesting and you'll find a lot more historically interesting and a much greater picture than whose dna is interrelated. Much more legwork but much more legimate..
All the work has been done the right way. Literally hundreds if not a thousand years of lineage and thousands of photos stored in a proprietary format you can't download or export. At this point, when she goes, her life's work goes with her. There has to be an open-source ancestry program that can import and free the database.
Maybe talking to your relatives about where your family came from and populating a family tree?
