Perhaps the synthetic payload that caused the coordinated "virus" simply existed exclusively on the business end of PCR test swabs.

Or* the swabs themselves damaged sensitive soft tissue in the very back of the nasal cavity, inviting in some nasty immune responses that are catalyzed from the excessive and improper/constant use of a mask?
