You may not be far off from the mark. Most people think that demon possession has to be heads turning 360 degrees and crawling on the ceiling. But Satan is a clever beast and knows to be more subtle than that. So getting people slightly insane and then planting this kind of behavior in them seems much more in line with possession in the modern age.
