For awhile they were the biggest band on the planet. Many pictures of Bono doing the old “one eye” thing. I’d like to think they still had their humanity during the Joshua Tree years. That album is a such a huge part of my youth. I think that by Achtung they made their deal at the crossroads.
They certainly have never done much in terms of playing - and it's not that keeping it simple can't be done far better/musically (Stones, AC/DC just two great examples of this). Their drummer is worse than Ringo FFS. Just blech.
I think U2 would have given anything to be famous.

I think they wanted to be famous more than they wanted to be musicians. IIRC they said something to that effect in a documentary.
