Indeed. The kind of attack I'm talking about is just in this format: Candidate X suddenly starts to look like he/she has a real chance against the establishment choice. Blogs that are interested in the candidates (for whatever reason, pro or con) suddenly have a lot of warnings about something the candidate did or said or a person was associated or the usual symbols which absolutely mean something appear. They are definitely meant to provoke. If this news had been in a lefty blog it would still be ammunition. So thoughtful consideration of the source and present are the wise course.
