This would explain the trend for news stories that were based on Twitter reactions. Have bots create a consensus position and then report that on tv as reality.

Exactly. Which reminds me of Sharyl Attkisson's wonderful TedTalk on astroturfing. If you haven't seen it, it's < than 11 minutes long. I'd highly recommend it.
