What is this thread all about??
Just general discussion. Stuff on your mind. Talk about hobbies, health, God/scripture, news, help, current topics, theories and predictions, whatever the case may be.
This is the second of what May be many, let’s see how it goes
I’ve had my eye on a Porsche 996 or 997 for a many years now… I think I will take this subconscious thought of owning one someday and make it a conscious thought of owning one and actively working on obtaining one within a year.
What are your short term/long term goals??
My mantra is “set the bar higher. Even if you don’t achieve that super high expectation, you’ll achieve something within the middle; that middle area may even have been higher than your original expectations”
I presume you've looked into that gen's motor issues/know what to look for in terms of mods etc (or stick with the turbo of course). It's the right time for these cars as they won't get cheaper. I think the 997 is the sweet spot (looks, better interior)(as again you likely know, half of this is for others new to all this) and after that the car simply got too bloated and I lost interest - it's funny that at the time it came out the 996 was not that appealing but vs the bloated things now I'd take it any day of the week (2002 IIRC facelift had a lot of significant upgrades like to the aero and stuff so for that gen that's where I'd target things).
(For people going WTF are they talking about, the numbers are Porsche internal model codes for 911s, in this case the first two liquid-cooled generations.)
Yes, I’m aware of the faulty bearing, which is why I’d get the 4S since that version doesn’t have that issue. Although, I think the 997 will be the better option. But, I wouldn’t shy away from the 996, id just replace the bearing of anything before it happens.
I wasn't aware the 4S is the other motor - if so great...it almost rings a bell that it does now that you mention it though...but I wouldn't want the AWD version personally, unless you intend for snow tires and some fun with that....
As for the bearing, it's not just put a fresh one in, but the full sort of "fix all this" kits that are out there (though I'm not sure if the "d-chunk" failure has any cure other than prayer/wood knocking/etc?).
Main reason I'd shy away from 996 is by now interiors are disintegrating (edit: ok I'm exaggerating - somewhat!), they really went cheap there so you need one that was parked inside and really cared for/treated with protectant etc....
Aside: I was like "well I don't want to get involved in random chit chat" but then of course someone had to bring up these damn cars LOL
Fwiw, I'm thoroughly enjoying reading. 🍿
