Oaks are susceptible to oak wilt, which is a virus carried by a tiny beetle. Once the oak wilt gets into a tree, it can go from oak to oak through the roots. It will wipe the tree out.

Cover the wounds on an oak, with pruning spray, or latex asap. The only safe time to prune an oak is in winter after the first freeze.

Thanks! Yeah, this is one of the oldest tracts of woods around here...I just lucked into it by the grace of God. It's not all "mine"..but 1 acre is and other 2 house's residents are elderly and let' us traipse around their woods, too...

It'll be tomorrow or Monday. Coincidentally, my wife met an arborist about 3 months ago and we're gonna call him Monday

Great advice/knowledge.
