It is a decision made on an innate desire to stick with your "tribe." Since tribes aren't so well defined any more, people go with the advertising. Wouldn't you want to affiliate with people who had "kind" solutions, vs. heartless greed-driven ones?

1984s never ending present already exists. If you don't have the time to delve into 25 years of history on a subject and know how to exclude the mainstream sources, you don't get a good enough picture to know you're being lied to.
