In "Brave New World" Huxley said the drug SOMA would induce euphoria and compliance.

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is called the "God drug".... inducing a state of consciousness that supposedly reveals the true nature of the universe.

Peyote was a vision-inducing drug for many of the Southwest Indian tribes.

I'm not sure why people are drawn to experience the not-real... perhaps the real is simply too much for them. We are a strange species.
