There has to be some link. Thyroid issues should be rare. Big pharma has a customer for life it seems.

The gland synthesizes hormones by combining Iodine with Tyrosine. Iodine deficiency is one concern, but it’s not only a matter of bioavailability.
Iodine is in the Halogen family of elements. (If you ever wondered why you had to learn about the Periodic Table...). Other halogens — chlorine, fluorine, and bromine, share similar chemical bonding properties and compete with iodine uptake and utilization.
Bromated foods, perchlorate, fluoridated water, as well as a wide range of endocrine disrupting chemicals interfere by binding to hormone receptors and modifying gene expression.
Big pharma benefits, but is not the direct cause.
