Odds of dying during a FULL marathon is less than 1%, it just gets publicized by the media a ton.

This was only a half, but it was very humid and the dew point was high, which means heat could have been an issue.

However, that is A LOT of runners taken to a hospital. Normally there are enough med tents to give fluids and treat and release at the finish line.

I have seen runners getting fluids and collapsed on the course during a hot half marathon in Chicago years ago.
