Oddly, that criticism will hold little weight, even though it's a valid argument. There are so many reasons why solar is being pushed in the most absurd ways possible.
One that manages to trip up many greenies is when you mention that for a solar power plant to operate, it needs a connected turbine ready to maintain output if some clouds show up. The reason is that most of them don't understand that to provide power to the grid is essentially in a contract along the lines of "from x time to y time, you will supply ___ MW of power." Where if the solar array is 1 MW short, that generator needs to be on standby to make up the difference.
Very true. When the solar array feeds into the grid, there are generators that can ramp up to pick up the slack when clouds pass over the solar panels. It is difficult for grid operators to maintain consistent high quality power when solar is part of the mix.
There's also the factor that the grid management puts renewable energy on the lowest priority for inclusion into the grid. (Although that might have changed some since I was looking into that topic)
Unfortunately, due to CA government requirements, Utilities have to purchase solar and wind energy as part of their renewable portfolio at prices that are triple the cost of ‘dirty’ energy. See who makes money from this crap and you’ll know why it’s still around. Search ‘Hunter Biden and solar energy and wind energy.’ The crooks are making money while the customers get screwed.
That does sound about right, and part of that cost relates to the redundancy needed to ensure that when 'on' it supplies what they advertise.
Then there are people like Cernovich who are pushing people to get into solar installations as a career option with high earning potential. He got pissed off when I mentioned that the only reason people save money is because of taxpayer money going in, and the manufacturers get tax money to be able to pay out that much, but that it's all just scams, and that while I have the skills to do it, my integrity would not allow me to make money like that where there's no expectation of benefit for the buyer.
Was one of the few times he responded to me, and essentially gave that argument a "that's out of context" level of counter argument.
